SenseAbilities
SenseAbilities is designed to restore comfort in the sensory environment to individuals with early-stage dementia. The work emphasizes the pleasure of sensory experiences still available to those with decreasing physical capacities, such as appreciating the smoothness of velvet, the grace of a flower, the beauty in a melody. For people suffering from dementia, altered perception can become a frightening experience. When the perceptions of these individuals are denied or dismissed by caregivers, that rejection of their reality may cause them to shut down emotionally. This leaves caregivers unsure of how to communicate successfully with them. SenseAbilities helps caregivers gain an understanding of the experience of dementia through the creative process generated from each session.
SenseAbilities sessions are led by artists who encourage individuals with dementia to explore their reactions to "sensory triggers" such as fabrics, fragrance, color, flowers, and familiar music. By encouraging personal responses to these triggers, the program invites participants to focus on aspects of the physical environment that are pleasurable and meaningful to them as individuals.
Objects that produce the strongest reactions can serve as focal points for memories and opinions or imaginative associations conjured on the spot. These can be recorded or further serve as catalysts for visual-art projects, poems, or movement.
